Music Technology Workshop

The initial idea for this workshop came about after visiting the NS soundcloud page. With a curiosity  to see the roster and hear some of the music, it was difficult to determine if the music on the soundcloud page was produced by NS, but the number of views for Dave Harrington’s Darkside project was a good indicator of the popularity of this particular work (2 of the 3 tracks posted have more than 600,000 views).  Further research indicated that a good portion of the views were from folks in Brooklyn.

So… what if we put together a workshop which centers on Dave Harrington’s work, inviting participation from other artists with different aesthetics and commercial applications; Brian Trifon of Trifonics, and Daniel Wehr, a German composer – producer working in Los Angeles. We can add another connection to this medium through Sonar and Georgia Taglietti, in Barcelona.

And to top things off, we can include a lottery drawing to win free software and/or hardware, courtesy of one or more of our sponsors; Native Instruments, Ableton, Line-6, Roland, Cinesamples, U-He, etc. Separate offers; one for anyone who signs up for the NS newsletter, and another offer for registered (paid) workshop participants.

In this way, we invite the local participants from Brooklyn, while simultaneously reaching out and connecting with artists and other participants from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Barcelona, etc.

General Outline - Roadmap

• Creating your setup – software & hardware options

• Sequencing  101 – configurations, templates, working with plugins

• Programming 101 – tools and techniques for translating your ideas to project files

• Sample players & libraries – developing your own setups with NI’s Kontakt

• Adding live instruments to the session

• Working with a variety of music styles and genres; EDM, Video Games, Film Scoring, Live Performance, Production Music Libraries

• Create ensembles to rehearse and record the compositions and arrangements – OPTIONAL

Potential artists/teachers include;

Dave Harrington (Darkside)

Brian Trifon  (Trifonics)

Max Blomgren  (Film Composer)

Daniel Wehr (Production Music for Libraries, Movie Trailers, Reality TV)

Check with primary artist for additional guest artists PLUS; invite a Copyright & Publishing expert and, if possible, a direct connect with the folks at earbits or similar…

…the artist’s label,  hardware & software  manufacturers; Native Instruments, Ableton, Steinberg, Cinesamples, Novation, M-Audio, Avid, Yamaha, Roland, Line 6, U-He, Izotope, etc. Also, PRO’s, earbits, ETHOS

2 of the 3 tracks from “Darkside’s” playlist on the NS Soundcloud page, total more than 600,000 views.  These numbers alone support the idea of inviting Dave Harrington to take part in a Music Technology Workshop. It could focus on Dave’s work  or work with Dave and introduce other artists, with different aesthetics and their unique software and hardware tools for music creation and production.
