Songwriter - Production Workshop

We welcome musicians, singers, songwriters and music producers from all musical backgrounds and level of experience to join us for this exciting artist directed workshop. Participants are invited to submit original works to be reviewed, developed, critiqued, performed and produced on the stage of National Sawdust. We’ll record your music and have you meet with representatives from BMI, ASCAP, on your way to licensing or publishing your original work. And be sure to complete the entry form for a chance to receive free music software or recording equipment.

 

General Outline - Roadmap

• What’s in a song? The lyric and melody, various forms & musical  textures as a framework

• Creating your studio setup – software & hardware options

• Production 101 – configurations, templates, tools and techniques for translating your ideas

• Adding live instruments to the session

• Working with a variety of music styles and genres; EDM, Video Games, Film Scoring, Live Performance, Production Music Libraries

• Participants submit original compositions or arrangements for critique and development

• Create ensembles to rehearse and record the compositions and arrangements

• Copyright and publishing experts provide participants with steps to present their works

• Meet with PRO representatives from BMI and ASCAP

• Introduce Joey Flores, CEO of “earbits” re: packaging, marketing and promoting the work

Check with primary artist for additional guest artists PLUS; invite a Copyright & Publishing expert and, if possible, a direct connect with the folks at earbits or similar…

• Nashville has the Bluebird Cafe, Brooklyn has the Songwriter’s Workshop at National Sawdust

• Partner with another organisation or a well established songwriting contest – check with NARAS

• Free software and hardware give-away for anyone who signs up for the workshop

• Secondary schools in the NY area, can we cross over to schools like MSM, The New School, NYU, Columbia, etc.  By inviting a variety of artists to lead the workshop we create a unique offering for schools like MSM…

• Need to create the announcement and manage communications and enrollment, in 2 parts; one for the physical space, and a second for the online participation only (audit)

• The lessons delivered for each workshop may require a component for managing the transmission of audio & video files, PDF scores, powerpoint slides, etc.  Check with NS to see if this can be managed with NS personnel.

• This is a 5-day workshop but can be modified to include additional hours and/or days.  The total enrollment will determine the final schedule for this workshop.

• As with all Ethos workshops, the day to day schedule will be adjusted, as needed, to accommodate the current NS calendar of events and performances

• Determine special needs to manage and facilitate the “free” software/hardware contest

Becca Stevens is an American jazz, pop, and folk singer, and guitarist. Jazz vocalist Kurt Elling listed her as one of his five favorite jazz vocalists and music critic Ted Gioia listed her albums Weightless (2011) and Perfect Animal (2015) among the one hundred best albums of the corresponding years.

She has collaborated with pianists Taylor Eigsti, Timo Andres, and Brad Mehldau, in addition to Grammy award-winning jazz ensemble Snarky Puppy. Stevens leads the Becca Stevens Band, with Liam Robinson on accordion and keyboards, Chris Tordini on bass, and Jordan Perlson on drums and percussion. Along with Gretchen Parlato and Rebecca Martin, Stevens comprises one third of the group Tillery.

Stevens grew up in North Carolina She attended the North Carolina School of the Arts and studied classical guitar, then went to The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City, where she received a degree in vocal jazz and composition.

Joseph Arthur (born September 28, 1971) is an American singer-songwriter and artist from Akron, Ohio, United States. He is best known for his solo material, and as a member of Fistful of Mercy and RNDM. Combining poetic lyrics with a layered sonic palette, Arthur has built his reputation over the years through critically acclaimed releases and constant touring; his unique solo live performances often incorporate the use of a number of distortion and loop pedals, and his shows are recorded live at the soundboard and made available to concertgoers immediately following the show on recordable media.

Arthur was discovered by Peter Gabriel in the mid-1990s, and signed to Gabriel’s Real World label as the first North American artist on the label’s roster. Arthur released his debut album, Big City Secrets (1997), and follow-up, Come to Where I’m From (2000), on Real World before signing with various independent labels between 2002 and 2006. He established his own record label, Lonely Astronaut Records, in 2006, and released two studio albums, Let’s Just Be (2007) and Temporary People (2008) with backing band The Lonely Astronauts. Arthur subsequently returned to performing and recording as a solo artist, releasing The Graduation Ceremony in 2011 and the double album, Redemption City in 2012.

In 2013, Arthur started a Pledge Music campaign to fund the release of his tenth studio album, The Ballad of Boogie Christ. The album was released on June 11, 2013.

Arthur is also an acclaimed painter and designer. His artwork has graced the sleeves of his entire discography; the sleeve design for his 1999 extended play Vacancy was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Recording Package.

Caroline Aiken (born August 8, 1955) is a singer and guitarist from Atlanta, Georgia whose work spans genres, from folk to blues to rock. Aiken has released seven albums and performed with Bonnie Raitt and the Indigo Girls.  As a songwriter and educator she leads a variety of workshops for musicians and songwriters, “Caroline’s performances, direct and sincere, are known for emanating a high level of infectious energy, and those that have heard her perform live leave wanting more. Her genre spans many styles, from rock/blues/folk/country to piano ballads to finger style guitar picking–all accompanied by her rich and soulful voice. Caroline is an accomplished and diverse musician, being at home on both guitar and piano. Victory Music in Seattle raved about Caroline’s “sensual voice, expert guitar, and masterful songwriting.”

 

ludo-gambinoLudwig Göransson (born September 1, 1984), also known under the stage name Ludovin, is a Swedish composer best known for his work on US TV sitcoms Community, Happy Endings, and New Girl, as well as composing the music for 30 Minutes or Less and collaborating with Donald Glover on the Childish Gambino albums Camp and Because the Internet. He also released a free EP How to Find a Party on his website under the pseudonym Ludovin. In 2012 Ludwig Göransson produced HAIM’s debut EP and helped establish the band with a brand new sound on the song “Forever”. He also produced two songs on HAIM’s debut album Days Are Gone.
He composed the score to the critically acclaimed drama Fruitvale Station, based on the fatal shooting of 22-year-old Oscar Grant on January 1, 2009. The film won the Grand Jury Prize and Audience awards in the Dramatic category at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, also taking home the Avenir Prize and Un Certain Regard awards at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2013, he composed the music for the movie We’re the Millers.
In August 2013, Göransson signed a management deal as a composer for Jay-Z’s label, Roc Nation.
He continues to tour with Childish Gambino, and is writing the music for Donald Glover’s new tv series, Atlanta.
